FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW?

Hopefully you will find the information you are looking for below. Of course, if you cannot find an answer, just contact us and you will receive an answer shortly.

COSTS?

The cost of a one hour psychology session or couples' session (usually 51 minutes) is usually based on the rates that the medical aids put out once a year. Some psychologists charge above the medical aid rates depending on their years of experience, their specialisations, and their qualifications.

According to the Medical Schemes Act, No. 131 of 1998, mental health conditions form part of South Africa's Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs). This means that every registered medical scheme, regardless of the benefit option, is legally required to fund the diagnosis, treatment and care of qualifying PMB mental health conditions. For eligible members, this typically includes up to 21 days of psychiatric hospitalisation or 15 outpatient psychotherapy sessions per year, provided the member meets the diagnostic criteria for a qualifying PMB mental health disorder and the treatment complies with the PMB regulations.

Non-medical aid payments and copayments may be settled via cash, card, Snapscan, or electronic funds transfer.

EXPECTATIONS?
The psychology environment is a professional space, but where you are welcomed warmly and sincerely. Sessions usually last 51 minutes, depending on your therapist. Initially, about half of your session will be doing admin and your expectations for your psychology, and in the other half, you will talk about your specific situation that brought you to therapy. As for the number of consultations required, this will vary depending on the nature of what brought you to the therapy room and the specific therapeutic approach. Psychodynamic approaches (talk therapy) is usually longer-term therapy whilst CBT (cognitive-behavioural therapy) is usually shorter-term therapy.

CONFIDENTIALITY?
The psychologist will keep all your information strictly private and confidential, however, information may be divulged if you give permission to the psychologist, if you implied intent to hurt yourself or others, or if the court asks for your information.

FEELING CRAZY?
We are all human. It is natural to feel that something may be wrong with you. Psychologists understand that you may feel vulnerable and that you may feel ashamed of your problems. We all go through difficult times, however, one does not need to feel burdened by coping entirely on your own. Many people turn to others for help, be it a doctor, physiotherapist, dentist, or a psychologist. We are here to respect you and listen to you carefully.

PSYCHOLOGIST VS PSYCHIATRIST?
Both are mental health professionals and both can identify what kind of difficulty you may be experiencing. Psychologists are specialists who have training in listening and behavioural change. Psychologists are also trained in conducting formal assessments.

Psychiatrists are doctors. They are medical professionals. They receive specialist training in the biology, chemistry, and science of the nervous system to manage severe mental illness. They receive foundational training in psychotherapy.
